30th June 2012 Wangi Falls

Today we are going to check out the park....the furthest we can go is about 70 kms into the park before you need a 4 wheel drive... So we decided to drive to the furthest and work our way back...

The first location was Bambo Creek an old Tin Mine.. The mine is an example of small scale, labour intensive mines operated without the benefit of heavy earth machinery. It was typical of many of the mines in the Northern Territory which operated in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, especially those operated by the Chinese.

The remains of their house

The remains include the mine workings.... the tin processing mill.... and the associated domestic and industrial remains. Tin was discovered at Bamboo Creek in 1906 and was mined irregularly until 1955. The wide variety of remains are notable in that they reflect the complete range of activities associated with underground mining.

The next one was Walkers Creek which was a 3.5 return walk in because it was so hot we decided to just walk to the first camp site.... that was far enough lol .. Campers have to walk in here with all their gear if they want to camp for the night...

John spotted a Goanna taking a dip

The next one was the Cascades which we were advised was a very hard trek into them and all up hill etc ... So we moved on again....to Wangi Falls where we had planned to have lunch...

It was very busy here and very popular... And why not it was a lovely place...

The waterfalls were beautiful and Michael went in for a swim...

John decided to check out the trek into the forest which leads up the mountain to the top of the falls .. We were told once again it was a hard trek... So I didn't go with him...he made it half way but it was too much even for John even though he was very disappointed he knew he had to turn back..

We enjoyed our picnic lunch here, and then headed back to the park... Stopping at Magnetic Termite Mounds on the way back...these termite moulds are an unusual shape and always are built north to south amazing how the termites know this.
