6th June 2012 - Broome Port

We went for a drive to check out the Port where all the cargo and cruise liners dock in Broome... shame we just missed the Dawn Princess which docked yesterday...

Broome Port is the largest deep-water access port serving the Kimberley region and is open to shipping on a 24 hour basis seven days a week.

It has a 640m long boardwalk which is popular with sightseers and recreational fishers, but you are only allowed to go so far ... you are not allowed on the actual berthing wharves because police surveillance has been boosted because of concerns about animal rights activists.

The Broome port  exported over 90,000 cattle last year, and local authorities are worried about its potential to become a target for those opposed to the live export trade...

We went out to dinner tonight to a pub called Matso's  which is very popular with the locals...Matso's is the Kimberley's award wining microbrewery and is a true Broome treasure...

At the helm of Matso's Broome Brewery we are fortunate to have the services of Marcus Muller, a Master Brewer who has over 16 years brewing experience around the world. Marcus combines the finest natural ingredients, traditional time honoured brewing techniques and modern technology, to produce a range of beer styles that -above all else- aim to deliver flavour.

The building dates back to 1910 where it was originally a Union Bank which was the first bank in Broome..

We had a lovely dinner there, John ordered kangaroo and it was cooked to perfection...

I had Barramundi and Lois & Michael had pork belly...

John sampled the beer... his first one being a Pearl's Pale ale.. which he said was very nice... then getting more daring he tried the beer called "Chilly Out" OMG he nearly died... it was so hot you could only sip it... now John can stand hot chilly but this beat him... he had to leave it...it was just impossible to drink....
