22nd - 23rd May One night stop overs

Tuesday 22nd May 2012 Yule River

We stopped overnight just next to the river at Yule River and like, always not much water in these huge river beds...

We had a family of wild quails come and visit us at happy hour..

Wednesday 23rd May 2012

Leaving Yule River we drove to Port Hedland...to take a look around there...

Port Hedland is a town of over 20,000 people located in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia. The original inhabitants, the Karriyarra people, call the place Marapikurrinya for the hand shaped formation of the tidal creeks coming off the natural harbour.

The Port is one of the world’s largest in tonnage terms, with over 70 million tonnes of product worth more than $3 billion shipped each year.

We checked out the port and surrounding areas..Not much here really...

Saw a huge stock pile of salt which made the machine on top look so tiny...

These road trains are massive !!!

We stayed at Degray Rest area overnight and we had another visitor for Happy Hour..another type of quail called a Buff Banded Rail which took a lot of research by John and Michael to finally find a name for it...

Thursday 24th May 2012

Moved on the next day to our next overnight stay Stanley Rest area not much on the roads to report about today... just long straight roads.... and long road trains to pass....

Pleased with the camp site though.... was all paved and no "red dust".... plenty of room...
