20-21st June Timber Creek..

On our way again this morning and just outside Kununurra we crossed another milestone over to the Northern Territory where we lost 1.5 hours time difference.

I also find it quite amazing that the speed limit over here is 130 kms

We headed out to Timber Creek which is a nice stop over between Kununurra and Katherine...where we stayed here for 2 nights...

Timber Creek is situated on the doorstep of the Gregory National Park and is home to about 70 people....mostly aboriginal....Timber Creek is the traditional land of the Ngaliwurra Aboriginal people, who provided early European settlers with valuable bush knowledge and acted as guides for the local police. A police station was first established in Timber Creek in 1898. Initially just a hut and a goat yard, the dwellings were upgraded to iron and steel in 1908 and this structure has been reopened as the Timber Creek Police Station Museum.

Fishing is one of Timber Creek's biggest drawcards. The beautiful Victoria River, running through deep valleys and gorges, is one of the Northern Territory's most scenic places to catch barramundi....but of course we still have not got around to catching one yet...

The back drop of the park is the Victoria River and the trees are full of BATs!!!! squaking all day :(

The park management feed the crocodiles every day at 5pm off a man-made bridge across the river.... and we had a close encounter once again with these fearsome creatures...5 of them turned up once they smelt the meat being offered...

And of course every where we go we see the Kites...These birds in the NT are like pigeons in London Square they are everywhere

19th June 2012 Cruise on the Ord River

We were picked up at our park and driven to the boat for our cruise on the Ord river which will take us 50 kms up the river to the Dam wall, I was really looking forward to this..it was a beautiful warm day.

The bird life on this river was amazing, I tried to take photos of all of them .. some I missed ...they wouldn't sit still and pose for me :(

Australasian Darter

Comb - Crested Jacana

Spotted heaps of crocodiles...!!!

Daddy and baby Jacana

These birds are interesting, they live on the top of this weed their whole life, Mummy lays the egg then leaves....Daddy has to incubate and hatch the chicks then rears them all on his own...and try and protect them from the crocodiles eatting the babies

Daddy Jacana

Then the dam came into view, which means we have seen this dam from all angles now LOL but a truly awesome site from the boat...

We had a look around for our albino crocodile but he was nowhere to be seen... but plenty more were....

On the return back down the river, we spotted more birds....

Pied Cormorant

Male Darter

Nankeen Night Heron

Further down the river... Dylon our boat guide pulled over and gave us a talk on the river ... it was very informative..

We then travelled further down they river where we pulled over to the side of the bush and hidden behind the trees was a lovely place all set up for our afternoon tea..

After feeding our faces we then sailed passed these huge rock formations and nestled in the rocks were Rock Wallabies...All Rock Wallabies favour habitat with rocky outcrops and slopes, cliffs and gorges or are found on boulder piles and escarpments, especially in the wet-dry tropics. Their ability to scale precipitous rock faces in leaps that appear to defy gravity comes from adaptations to the feet and tail.

You have to be good to spot them as they are high up on the rock faces... but Dylon was good at that !!

And to finish off a lovely day we finished with a beautiful sunset ....

17th June 2012 The Ord Dam

We decided today to go and check out the Ord Dam...I have spoken about it in my other blogs so I thought I would just share the photos with you...

We first drove over the wall....

The we went to the water level where we had a nice picnic lunch...

After lunch we headed back up over the bridge again and up further to the look out...

White at the lookout John was checking the area through his binoculars... and low and behold he spotted a crocodile... not only was it a crocodile but a rare albino one...

We were so high up I'm amazed he spotted it...

Amazing he spotted it....

Driving through the rock formations on the way home were spectacular
