16th September 2012 ... The Town 1770

We took the scooter for a ride to the town of Seventeen Seventy today...which is only around 5 kms from Agnes Water...

The town of 1770 is located on the sun - drenched stretch of sub-tropical surf coastline north of Fraser Island and south of the Whitsundays.
It is the closest point to access to the Southern Great Barrier Reef, its the northern most surf beach on the East Coast of Australia, it is also one of only three places on the East Coast of Australia that a sunset is experienced over water, the water is crystal clear all year round, and the temperature is warm and sunny 300 days of the year and never goes over 32 degrees... perfect place...

The historical legacy of European settlement is rich in Seventeen Seventy, marking the site where Captain Cook stepped ashore lured by the sheer natural beauty.

Lieutenant James Cook, on Wednesday 24 May 1770, went ashore near Round Hill Head with a party of men in order to examine the country, accompanied by Joseph Banks and Dr Solander. Cook’s ship, the Endeavour, anchored about 2 miles off shore.

This was Cook’s second landing in Australia and his first in Queensland, hence the Town of 1770 being referred to as the birthplace of Queensland. Cook and his party landed within the south point of the bay where they found a channel leading into a large lagoon. ‘’In this place there is a room for a few ships to lie in great security, and a small stream of fresh water.’’ Cook wrote. Many large birds were seen, namely pelicans.

Upon the shore they saw a species of bustard, one of which was shot. It was like a large turkey and weighed seventeen and a half pounds. It was the best bird they had eaten since leaving England, and in honour of it they called the inlet Bustard Bay.

Cook’s party did not see any natives during their shore visit, but they did find campsites, fires and artefacts. From the ship, however, members of the Endeavour’s crew observed about 20 members of the Meerooni tribe on the beach. At 4.30am on Thursday 25 May 1770, Cook made sail out of the bay.

There is some conjecture about the origin of the name ‘’Agnes Water’’. Some believe the area was named after the schooner ‘’Agnes’’ which disappeared from nearby Pancake Creek in 1873. Others believe that the area was named after Agnes Clowes, the daughter of the first European settlers, Daniel and Rachel Clowes, who built large stockyards and ran cattle on the miles of unoccupied coastal country in 1878.
1770 Lt. James Cook anchored The Endeavour in Bustard Bay and landed at Round Hill Inlet on 24 May, naming Bustard Bay and Bustard Head.

We finished off with lunch at the The Tree Restaurant... overlooking the bay, and a little Blue Faced Honey Eater came down onto the tree at the side of us and sang to us..

We returned tonight to the restaurant for dinner on our last night here to capture the sunset over the water...

14th September 2012 Agnes Waters

After leaving Rockhampton we headed to Agnes Waters ... I was looking forward to staying here relaxing at the beach for 5 days...We had great reports from Maureen & Craig about how nice it was...

The first day was great...

And then the workmen moved in... all the vans on the waterfront views were removed, and they started chopping trees down, digging up concrete and laying new concrete... workman every where..

Apparently the beautiful caravan spots on the water view fronts no longer exist, they are erecting cabins all along the front...

We were parked at the back so it did not bother us too much...

Nice area to stay though.... very peaceful...

After settling in we went for a walk on the beach which is only about 100 metres from the house...

They had a big display of kites on the beach...

At the edge of the park on the beach they have these amazing "Safari Huts" they are canvas tents on stilts...

10th September 2011..Rockhampton

Heading to Rockhampton... we had an over night stay at Carmila...just a little town... but captured an awesome sunrise  in the morning through the bedroom window....

Arrived at Rockhampton on the 11th and met up with our travelling buddies again, Michael and Lois. It was great to see them... and, just after we arrived, more friends of theirs arrived... Bob and Deidre .... so we had a nice group for "Happy Hour"

We didn't do too much in the few days we were here, just catching up with our friends and hanging around relaxing... Of course John and Michael had a trip to Bunnings...John had come up with an idea to stabilise the front of the house to stop it rocking... so the boys had fun assembling it..

Bob was the sit down supervisor

John was very pleased because his idea works !!!!

While there we kept an eye on two Bush Stone-Curlew birds who had laid eggs, one sat on the nest while the other took watch...he actually thought he was camouflaged but he wasn't ...lol  and every so many hours they would change places...so cute...

 On watch
Changing shifts

The last night in Rockhampton for Michael and Lois we all went out for our usual farewell dinner...

8th September - The Girls at Airlie Beach

The girls returned the favour and came over to Airlie Beach to spend the day with us... John picked them up from Shute Harbour off the ferry bright and early..... and then he dropped us girls off in town to do the shops... It was Saturday so the markets were on so that was the first stop... then we shopped in the main street... Airlie has some great shops...

John came back in town and met us for a late lunch and then we took the girls back to Shute Harbour for them to return back to the island...

It's been a great 3 days spending time with them and enjoying doing the girlie things... shopping etc... and thanks to John for chauffeuring  us around.

6th - 7th September - Hamilton Island

Up bright and early today as we are going over to Hamilton Island .... My girls Mychele Sharon and Jenna are arriving today for a 4 day holiday and we decided to go over and share 2 days with them...So I was very excited to see my girls...

We caught the ferry from Shute Harbour and it was rather choppy going over... the waters was splashing high up the side of the ferry...

Arriving at Hamilton we were able to check in straight away to our bungalow which was lovely, didn't take John long to settle in relaxing on hammock watching football ...

We hired a buggy and went down to the airport to meet the girls....

The girls were in the bungalow next to us.. once settled we went for a buggy ride around the island and stopped in town for lunch...

Relaxed around the pool before going out for dinner...

Jenna having an alone moment !

Mychele had fun comparing the colour of our legs... guess which one is mine...

We had fun time in the shops looking for a new hat for Mychele....

Mychele and I took the buggy up to "One Tree Hill" to catch some sunset shots... the place was packed ... they now serve cocktails up there while you wait for the famous Hamilton sunset...

We had dinner at the Marina

The next morning John and I went for a drive around again before returning  the buggy...

We all went for breakfast and then John and I checked out of the Bungalow and after relaxing around the pool for a little while we said our goodbyes to the girls and headed back to the main land.
